Opposites can attract.

OK, so in central Iowa we don’t live by an ocean. We don’t live by the mountains. However, a not-so-subtle landscaping trend can help us have a semblance of those feelings.
You might think that fire and water are opposites on the scale of life. But more and more, they are showing up in tandem in beautiful backyards. In some spots, of course, it’s just a lovely pool or just a statement outdoor fireplace that takes center stage.
But more and more, water features are working harmoniously with fire pits, fire tables, or fire bowls. They can be wood or gas, depending on the rules for your community.
While fire bowls are fun, so are water bowls. They can be made of concrete and can act like fountains, spilling into a pool at the perimeter for a soothing sound.
Iowans have been spending a lot of time at home during the past year. They have had a chance to look around and decide how to create a little aesthetic harmony in their surroundings.
S’mores, anyone? •
